ADMINISTRATIVE ZONE AND POPULATION |
|
Shanwei became a city directly under the
jurisdiction of the province in 1988, when it was approved by the
State Council. She has under her control Lufeng City, Haifeng County,
Luhe county and the Urban District. Besides, two economic
adminstrative zones have been set up, namely, the Honghaiwang
Adminstrative Zone. Shanwei City has a population of 2.55 million,
among which labouring population constitutes 51.5%. In the recent
years, quite a few secondary techinique schools and vocational schools
have been set up, carrying out multi-leveled, multi-patterned vocation
trainings, which has greatly raised the quality of labour and has met
the needs of economic development.

NATIONALITIES AND LANGUAGES |

The hans are the majority of the population. The
minority is the Shes,numbering only a little over 170, who have been
inhabiting in Shanwei for generations. What's more, overseas Chinese
and compatriots in Hongkong,Macao and Taiwan who have Shanwei as their
native land number approximately 1 million.
The languages used in Shanwei are mainly dialects of Hans, namely the
three main serials of Fujian dialects with Chao-Shan dialect as main
branch, Hakka dialect and Guangdong dialect (Cantonese). Situated in
the juncture of east Guangdong and the Pearl River Delta, Shanwei
belonged historically to Chao-Shan region and at the same time was
included in the Grand Huizhou region. That's the reason why the
languages here are complicated. Chao-Shan dialect is most commonly
used, Hakka is in vogue in northern mountainous areas, while Cantonese
is quite popular in the urban districts and coastal areas which have
close production, life and trade relations with Hongkong, Macao and
the Pearl River Delta. |

LIVELIHOOD AND TOURISM |

People's living standard has been increasing
greatly and so has people's consumption and purchasing power, which
should be contributed to the rapid economic developnent in recent
years. In 1997, the total retailing value of consumer goods of he city
increased 13% over the previous year. Citizens' percapita income for
living increased 5.2% respectively over the previous year.
Shanwei is a city of rich tourist resources which is known as the
Golden Coast for Tourism in east Guangdong Prvince. In the area there
are many well-known cultural relics under national presevation,
namely, the Red Plaza, Red Palace, Peng Pai's Old Houses, the Crag on
Xuanwu Mountain, the Goddess Ridge of Jinxiang, the "Cock-crowing
Temple" of Lianhua, "daidu Mountain" of Jiazi, "Yunan Pool" on Lujing
Mountain, "Qingyun Temple " an Hexi, Nanao Isle at Zhelang, Guiling
Isle at jiesheng, Shanghu Spa, etc. Such tourist resorts, after
decoration, exploration and construction in recent years, are
well-known both domestically and abroad, especially in South-east
Asia. |
