Shanwei Municipality

Shanwei is located in the southeast coast of Guangdong Province, bordering upon Huilai County of Jieyang Municipality in the east, Huidong County of Huizhou Municipality in the west, Zijin County of Heyuan Municipality in the north and verging on the South China Sea in the south. The municipality covers a land area of 5,271 square kilometers, accounting for 2.93% of the Province. Mountainous and hilly areas account for 43.7% of its total territory. Its coastline is as long as 302 kilometers, accounting for 9% of that of the Province. 93 islets, 11 ports and 3 bays cover the sea area under its jurisdiction. The territorial sea surface covers 23,800 square kilometers, accounting for 14% of the sea area in the Province. 22 ethnic groups inhabit in Shanwei, and the Han people make up 99.92%. Of the 21 ethnic minorities, She, Zhuang and Dong each has a population of 50 or more. Other ethnic minorities are scarce in population.

With the approval by the State Council, Shanwei Municipality was established in January 1988 on two original administrative counties of Haifeng and Lufeng. It now has jurisdiction over one county-level city, two counties and an urban district; namely, Lufeng City, Haifeng County, Luhe County and the Urban District, covering 47 towns, 2 townships, 6 urban resident community offices, 712 villages and 131 residential quarters.

Natural resources in Shanwei

a. Mineral Resources
Six categories or 17 kinds of mineral resources have been discovered. Some of them are rich in reserves like tin ore, sulfurous iron ore, quartz sand, granite, kaolin, iron, tungsten, bismuth, copper and aluminum.

b. Oceanic and aquatic resources
Shanwei Municipality has a large area of seawaters, 4.5 times its land area. The tidal flat of 10-meter isobaths totals 33,000 hectares. Along its coast, sand area covers 271 square kilometers with sand reserves of approximately 488 million cubic meters, providing plentiful sand for construction or land reclamation. The aquatic life in its sea waters consists of 14 categories, 107 families and 860 species, such as different kinds of algae - laver, gracilaria and gulfweed.

c. Water Resources
Flowing through Shanwei Municipality are 16 rivers with catchment area of above 100 square kilometers. The city has built 572 water storage projects, including 2 large and 18 medium-size reservoirs. 7.272 billion cubic meters of water resources have been discovered with potential installed capacity of 165,300 kilowatts.
